Did you know almost 50% of children experience tooth decay caused by bacteria by age four? This bacteria, is not present at birth but is acquired usually from the mother or another caregiver through close contact and sharing eating utensils – cups, glasses and spoons. Bacteria, is thought to be transferred to the child between the ages six and thirty six months. Children who become infected at this early age usually have a higher amount of tooth decay through their lifetime.

The earliest sign of dental decay may appear as a white chalky spot near the gum line of the upper front teeth. Unless steps are taken to reverse this process, the white spot area on the enamel will continue to break down. Early dental visits are important for your children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child visit a dentist within six months after the first tooth appears in the mouth or by twelve months. At the infant’s first dental visit, they will be checked for cavities and parents will learn how to properly clean their baby’s teeth. By starting your child’s dental visits at an early age, you can help your child have strong, healthy teeth all throughout life.
